Grey Area Drinker or Alcoholic? Which are you?

Grey Area Drinker or Alcoholic? Which are you?

So heartening to see Ben Gibbs creating a song to raise money for a charity that warns of the dangers of alcohol abuse. Great cause and a fantastic effort from Ben.

But I do wonder whether the BBC article raised questions in your mind as it did me.  The term Grey Area Drinker originated from Jolene Park in a TEDx talk in 2017 and describes those millions of people who haven't hit rock bottom before starting to reconsider their relationship with alcohol. What Jolene explains is that the majority of people who drink alcohol do not consider themselves 'an alcoholic' and therefore don't feel that they need to change.

Moreover, the common misconception is that people have to have one of those 'rock bottom' moments, (you know the ones, when you wake up in the morning and cannot remember what you said or did last night), before they decided to 'do something about their drinking'

This isn't true, and I would recommend to anyone that is questioning their own relationship with alcohol to reach out to a sobriety coach to explore what is possible before you do something you might not want to remember.

I would love to work with you on your journey and if you feel that I am the right person for you then book a free no obligation call with me.

But I understand that I cannot be right for everyone. If you would like to have a look at some of the other sobriety coaches I work with then have a look at the directory at The Sober Club

My final word on the BBC article? I believe the use of the term 'alcoholic' and 'recovered alcoholic' in this article may discourage some people from reading the article fully and understanding the huge achievement Ben has made. And if you want Ben's song pop along here
